Description
Oakwood Memory Care - Marin County
Set on five acres of serene Marin County landscape, our second community extends the Oakwood standard of physician-led memory care into a uniquely nature-oriented setting. Surrounded by towering redwoods, gentle hills, and the sounds of birdsong, Oakwood Marin provides a calming therapeutic environment that naturally reduces anxiety and agitation while promoting engagement and well-being.
Nature-Based Therapeutic Programs
- Horticultural Therapy - Certified horticultural therapists guide residents through gardening activities in our accessible raised-bed gardens, greenhouse, and orchard. Research shows gardening reduces agitation and improves mood in dementia patients.
- Nature Walking Program - Our secure, gently graded walking trails wind through gardens and woodland areas, providing safe outdoor exercise with sensory stimulation from native plants and wildlife.
- Animal-Assisted Therapy - Regular visits from therapy dogs, cats, and our resident miniature horse provide comfort, reduce stress, and spark joyful interactions even in residents with advanced dementia.
- Art in Nature - Outdoor art sessions where residents paint, sketch, or create crafts inspired by the natural surroundings, led by a certified art therapist.
Clinical Care
Under the clinical direction of Dr. James Watanabe, a neurologist specializing in cognitive disorders, our Marin community provides the same evidence-based memory care that distinguishes all Oakwood locations. Our nursing team is extensively trained in dementia care best practices, and our care plans are developed collaboratively with each resident's family and existing healthcare providers. We maintain a low staff-to-resident ratio to ensure personalized attention throughout the day and night.
Community Design
Our purpose-built, single-story campus is organized into intimate neighborhoods of 12 residents, each with its own living room, dining area, and access to outdoor spaces. This small-group model reduces overstimulation and allows staff to develop deep, meaningful relationships with each resident. The architecture incorporates natural wood, stone, and abundant windows that connect indoor spaces with the peaceful outdoor environment.

Small Neighborhoods Make the Difference
The 12-person neighborhood model is genius. My aunt knows every person in her neighborhood and the staff knows every detail about her. There is no getting lost in a crowd here. The miniature horse visits are the highlight of her week and she talks about the gardens constantly. A very special place that deserves recognition.
Expensive but Truly Exceptional
I researched memory care facilities across Northern California and Oakwood Marin is in a class by itself. The nature-based therapeutic approach is backed by solid research, the campus design is brilliant, and the staff quality is outstanding. It is the most expensive option we considered, but for my father's quality of life, it has been absolutely worth every dollar.
The Best Environment for Memory Care
We moved my mother from a traditional memory care unit in the city to Oakwood Marin and the change was dramatic. The peaceful natural setting, the gardening program, and the gentle pace of life here have all contributed to a noticeable improvement in her mood and sleep patterns. The staff is wonderfully trained and the medical oversight gives us confidence.
Beautiful Campus with Expert Care
The five-acre campus is absolutely beautiful and the design clearly reflects a deep understanding of what memory care residents need. The walking trails are safe and stimulating, the animal therapy visits bring so much joy, and the small neighborhoods feel intimate and homelike. The clinical care is equally impressive with a neurologist overseeing treatment plans.
Nature Therapy Makes a Real Difference
The transformation in my husband since moving to Oakwood Marin has been remarkable. His agitation has decreased significantly, and I believe the nature-based programming is a major factor. He spends hours in the gardens, which calms him in a way that medications alone could not. The small neighborhood model means the staff truly knows him and can anticipate his needs.
